Did you notice the IBM Lotus news that came out of TriState LUG yesterday?

October 12 2010

Yesterday at the TriState Lotus Users Group meeting in New York City, a bunch of IBM Lotus news was soft announced. By soft announce, it was talked about in sessions during the day. I tweeted a bunch of the news, as you can see here (in reverse order of course):

Let me highlight a couple of things:

1. Notes & Domino 8.5.3 are expected in the second quarter of 2011. This is a maintenance release with a handful of incremental features and updates to both Domino Designer for Eclipse (DDE) and XPages.
2. Notes & Domino 8.5.4 is expected by end of the year 2011.
3. Fix Packs for both 8.5.2 and 8.5.3 are planned quarterly.
4. Clustering will be an allowed feature of Domino Express 'in the future' - it was acknowledged IBM Lotus is working on this and just need to work out the details. But there was a commitment to make this happen. My personal opinion is that this will get announced at Lotusphere 2011 but that is pure speculation.
5. Blackberry Enterprise Server Express for Domino is coming 'soon' and is currently in beta.
6. LotusLive Notes will get the following features in the 'near term':
    - Disaster Recovery support
    - Blackberry BES Support (my guess is IBM is waiting for the above mentioned BES Express for this)
    - Customer specific anti-spam controls (black and white lists)
    - Traveler updated with Android support
7. LotusLive Notes will get the following features in the 'longer than near term':
    - additional reporting tools
    - presence awareness inside LotusLive Notes from LotusLive Sametime
8. Lotus Symphony 3 is shipping in October 2010

We also got the first public demo of the current state of IBM Project Concord - and what I believe is the first public admission that Project Concord will have spreadsheets and presentations as well as documents. First release will be in the LotusLive Labs and the delivery and packaging of Project Concord has not been announced yet.

We also got an updated overview of how IBM Project Vulcan will impact the IBM Lotus product line. As we were shown slides and a demo, it became apparent to me that Vulcan is a style, user interface, and cross product feature set blueprint. For instance, Project Vulcan is built in top of One UI Version 3 which will see on LotusLive first. The feature the cemented how Vulcan impacts the product line is the new 'Share Box'. Much like the sharing box at the top of every Facebook page, the Share Box allows a user to send an email, post a blog, create a task, and much more from the same place on every page, in the same way. So I could see this being in the Notes client that allows me to post to Notes, Connections, Quickr, LotusLive, and other products. The 'Share Box' will also allow others to plug in their own apps. I think the clear message is that IBM Project Vulcan != IBM Lotus Notes & Domino "Next" ... Vulcan is a subset of the features and functionality we will see in the next version of the product. Oh, and we also got a hint at the next release of the product timeline, but not anything I feel comfortable putting into writing. I expect we will hear more this year, and if not, at Lotusphere for sure.

Lots of cool news ... let's hope the news gets some more attention out there!

  1. 1) Jeremy Hodge says:

Nice to hear they are removing the clustering restriction on express. I hope they do the same for partitioning. With the ability to use it on as many servers as you need already, and with virtualization getting cheaper and cheaper, the partitioning restriction seems rather arbitrary.
