Nathan and I were chatting last night mussing about the yellowsphere and I got my daily Google alert for "Dream Theater" - yeah, I know. The first link was to this article - Percussion Ensemble Wins Division Title. I read thru and came to this part of the story:The show was entitled "Goodnight," and featured a dreaming theme. The music in the show featured a medley of songs from progressive metal bands Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment. The band practiced for over six months to perfect the routine. So high school percussion band playing a mix of Dream Theater and LTE. And doing it so well they were winning awards. I had to check this out. So I searched on YouTube and found this: It is seven minutes long but trust me it's worth every second. Talk about being blown away. Interpretive dance from the cymbalists? A drum core that can do marching patterns like no college band I have seen. A guitarist and bass player who were right on target with some of the hardest guitar and

The most amazing example of why musical education is so important - Mansfield High School Percussion EnsembleApril 5 2011
While this entry covers a topic specific to my musical tastes, that is not the focus of this entry. Background: On Wednesday evening, Mike Portnoy quit the band Dream Theater. For anyone who has read my blog or followed me on-line knows that Dream Theater is my favorite band. I don't have a DT tattoo or anything permanent, but otherwise some might call my fandom obsessive. Yes, my birthday gift to myself was a trip to Columbus, OH to see DT perform a one off headlining show during their summer tour with Iron Maiden (and good thing I did). What happened Wednesday was more than just the end of a chapter in Dream Theater. It was a wake up call that what I considered a unpopular passion being far more than I ever realized. I never felt that Dream Theater was popular. It was an edge taste that I shared with many of the geeks of the world. Dream Theater is a geeks band for sure. Musicians loved them, but so did the geeks of the world. I can't tell you how many times I would be chatting wit
Summer, specifically July 18th, 2010, can not come soon enough!
On Sunday, August 23rd, 2009, I had the pleasure of attending Progressive Nation 2009 - and it was a blast! Here are some thoughts about each band: the location was at the Chicago Theater - and thank you to the promoters for picking a location just 3 blocks from where I live. Nice walk home afterwards :-) Scale the Summit Scale the Summit is a modern day Liquid Tension Experiment - a 4 piece instrumental band that just rocks. They have two guitarists and no vocals - but you really don't miss them. Four outstanding musicians that I am sure picked up a bunch of fans on this tour. Big Elf Big Elf is what I would call classic prog rock - with a touch of that 70's hippie flair that makes me run the other way. Mike Portnoy listed their album as one of his top favorite of 2008, but I had a hard time getting into it. Stellar musicians all, the organ sounds and style just turned me off. If you like the old school prog style - think late era Beattles - with a mix of modern day

Commented DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy: "This is truly amazing.... that after almost 25 years together, this band is still growing and progressing and doing bigger and better numbers than ever... I can't think of many bands that can claim that. Plus — a progressive metal album with four songs over 12 minutes in the U.S. Top 10??? (wedged between JONAS BROTHERS, EMINEM and HANNAH MONTANA!) Hell must've frozen over!!!! (This must be a first of its kind...)" Mike Portnoy, drummer of Dream Theater, just posted this tidbit on the recording of their new album: Well, normally I wont share any studio info for fear of over speculation and analyzation (yes, there's another thread in the Forum with 21 pages of people talking about mine and JP's hair based on Jordan's studio diary!).... But I felt the need to share this excitement with y'all: Today I finished my drum tracks for the new Dream Theater album! And as I normally never give away song descriptions, titles, lengths, etc....I will say just this: Imagine a DT album with A Change Of Seasons, Octavarium, Learning To Live, Pull Me Under and The Glass Prison....all on one album.... COULD YOU HANDLE IT??????? Excited? I sure am!!!! Happy Turkey Day Everybody, MP To answer Mike's question .. no I could not :-)

It was great to see American Idol pick a winner this year with real musical talent, but is this picture of David Cook and Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater a preview of Cook's album to come? :-) ... read more about this picture on Mike's forum : Actually, I was SHOCKED to see that he did in fact know who I was.... In fact, he was totally psyched to meet me and immediately asked me to autograph his hat for him. I thought that was very cool of him. The guy is currently in the heart of a media frenzy and I am real happy for him as I think he's a real talent and deserves all of the success he is now enjoying.... For those wondering how on earth we even ended up in the same room in the first place... I took my family to the American Idol tour kickoff in AZ and brought my family backstage afterwards. We met all 10 performers and I got pix of each of them with my kids. They were all incredibly nice to them... David Cook was the only one of the bunch who got excited to meet me.
Liquid Tension Experiment brought their 10 anniversary reunion tour to Chicago on 6.26.2008 - last night. This is one of those concerts I have been waiting for a long time ... they only did a handful of shows when they released their 2 jam releases. I have seen Dream Theater many times, and Iron Maiden did a great show this year, but I would have given up both just to see LTE. The show starts. The for guys, Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, and Tony Levin, start jamming. They play about 60 minutes. They ripped out some killer LTE tunes, such as: Acid Rain Kindred Spirits Another Dimension Paradigm Shift Freedom of Speech Universal Mind John and Jordan did something from their "An Evening With ..." CD and we got something I did not know. All of a sudden, Jordan stops playing his keyboard. He walks over to Mike, says something, and then heads off stage. Mike goes on to tell us Jordan is having keyboard problems. So Mike, John, and Tony start jamming. And jammin
This is for the metal music fans out there, as well as the Dream Theater fans. Fuse TV's Talking Metal show gets together musicians to jam on classic metal songs. This jam, by the band "Turtlehead", is of the song "Overkill" by Motorhead. The members of the band? Bobby Blitz from Overkill singing, Frank Bello from Anthrax on bass, Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater on drums, and the two hosts playing guitar. In a world where "mashup" is something we hear used daily, this is a great one :-)
You can listen to a bunch of the songs from the upcoming Greatest Hit (and 21 other pretty cool songs) cd from Dream Theater today! Check out the remix of Pull Me Under. The drums sound a lot thicker and the overall sound is just very cleaned up. How I would love to hear DT record that song with JP's current guitar sounds :-)
I wish you could hear my reaction to this ... but screaming for joy just does not come across on a blog. Here are the details: LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT — the instrumental progressive rock/metal project featuring DREAM THEATER members Mike Portnoy (drums), John Petrucci (guitar) and Jordan Rudess (keyboards) alongside progressive rock icon Tony Levin (bass) of KING CRIMSON and PETER GABRIEL fame — will embark on a short "10th Anniversary Reunion Tour" in June. Confirmed dates are as follows: June 21 - Bethlehem, PA - NEARfest June 23 - New York City - BB King's June 25 - Chicago, IL - Vic Theater June 27 - Downey, CA - Downey Theater June 28 - San Francisco, CA - Bay Area Rock Fest In 1998 and 1999, LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT released two instrumental albums that set the prog world on fire. After the success of the two albums and the project's undeniable chemistry, Rudess was asked to join DREAM THEATER full-time and the project was put on the shelf for an indefinite hiatis.... unt
